South Street Arts & Entertainment (Self Guided), Philadelphia
Eclectic, exciting, loud and colorful are just a handful of verbs that describe the vibrant locale that is South Street. Over the years it has undergone numerous transformations, but despite the changes several constants remain, such as nightclubs, bars playing live music and crowds who are here to party hard.
On South Street there is a wonderful mix of groups, ages and cultures. Among them are artists, city professionals, punk rockers, teens and adults all blending harmoniously together. Diversity is also reflected in the many ethnic restaurants, shops, cafés and bars. The choice is seemingly limitless with more than 300 shops and over 60 places to grab a meal and a drink.
One of the most famous eateries is Jim's Steaks, which has been serving cheese-steaks for 70 years. As you dine, look at the walls which are filled with pictures of the many celebrities who have eaten here. A good spot for some late night/early morning dining is Lorenzo and Sons.
South Street is also alive with trendy art, particularly at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. This artistic attraction covers the equivalent of half a city block and includes indoor galleries and outdoor spaces. There are tiled passages, mosaics and an outdoor mosaic sculpture garden, all by Isaiah Zagar, a talented local artist.
