Saone Promenade Walk (Self Guided), Lyon
A pleasant, leisurely walk alongside the river Saone will not only introduce you to some captivating natural scenery, but also to views over the Renaissance façades of Old Lyon and some noteworthy historical buildings. They include the magnificent late 19th-century Fourvière basilica, the former Palais de Justice and Quai Saint-Antoine and its daily market.
This city center market spans two quays and is the second largest market in Lyon. It has stalls piled high with fruit, vegetables, cheeses, meat, fish, breads, cakes, flowers and much more. Typically, more than 100 traders set up their stalls in this open-air market.
Near the promenade is the rue Mercière, a haven of wonderful cuisine, including traditional French fare and meals with delicious contemporary twists. There are approximately 40 restaurants lining this cobblestone street. The atmosphere here is always convivial, but even more so in the summer when the restaurants open up their terraces and the tables and chairs spill out onto the streets.
Another great time to visit this pedestrianized street is during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The restaurants are festooned with lights and decorations, inside and out. And at all times of year, the aromas emanating from the kitchens are simply divine.
