Neve Tzedek Walk, Tel Aviv

Neve Tzedek Walk (Self Guided), Tel Aviv

Neve Tzedek is situated in southwestern Tel Aviv and is one of the city's oldest districts. There may be old narrow streets and restored buildings, but the restaurants, cafés, bustling crowds and animated shoppers demonstrate that the area is still very young at heart. Wander through the attractive streets, admiring the Oriental architectural style of the buildings as you go.

The main thoroughfare is Shabazi Street, but don't just stick to its shops. Take detours down the side lanes to discover even more shops and fascinating buildings. A lot of the shops in the area are small, unique independent boutiques.

Visit the Suzanne Dellal Center, Tel Aviv's official dance center and home of the renowned Bat-Sheva dance group. The center puts on dance and theater performances, and outside the building is a piazza and small, well-tended gardens. Among the other notable buildings that you will see during your walk in Neve Tzedek are Rokach House, a museum and arts center and Clouche House, the first Jewish home built outside of Jaffa.

As well as the sightseeing and shopping, take time out to enjoy one of the other reasons that many people come to the area, eating and drinking. There are smart restaurants, trendy bistros, pavement cafés and street takeaways. Between them all, they offer a wide range of cuisines.

On 11 April 1909, 66 Jewish families gathered on a desolate sand dune to parcel out land via lottery organized by the Ahuzat Bayit building society.
