La Guillotière Walk (Self Guided), Lyon
Guillotière is a lively, exciting and ethnically rich district, and was the first urbanized area on the left bank of the Rhone. For many years, the Pont de la Guillotiere was a gateway to the city of Lyon through which waves of immigrants would come from numerous countries. This is the oldest bridge in Lyon that crosses the river. The first bridge on this site was completed toward the end of the 12th century. It was made of wood and collapsed only a few years after its construction. The crossing was then partially rebuilt in stone.
There were numerous changes over the years and it was destroyed completely during World War II. The bridge we see today dates back to the 1950s. From it, there is a wonderful view of Fourvière Hill. This is a dominant feature of Lyon's skyline and at its summit, there is a basilica and a statue of the Virgin Mary.
One of the area's most famous attractions is the Chinatown. This is one of the largest Chinatowns in the country and its streets are filled with delicious aromas coming from the many restaurants. Explore shops selling curios and souvenirs and dine on traditional Cantonese cuisine.
