Indipendenza Walking Tour, Florence

Indipendenza Walking Tour (Self Guided), Florence

The Indipendenza area encompasses some of the wonderful features that make Florence such a great city to visit. They include spectacular architecture, history and shopping. When you are in buying mode, wander in and out of the area's colorful shops for delicious foods from all over the world. Browse the always busy Central Market which is situated in a cast-iron building that dates back to 1874. This is a superb place to come for fresh produce and Italian food specialties. At the outdoor San Lorenzo market, purchase leather goods, clothing and souvenirs.

With your history lover's hat on, go to the National Archaeological Museum, housed in a 17th-century palace. Examine the rich collection of Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian and Greek artifacts. See statues that are more than 2,000 years old, ancient ceramics, mummies and a pillar from the tomb of Seti 1, an Egyptian pharaoh.

For stunning architecture, visit the Basilica di San Lorenzo, a beautiful Renaissance building that was consecrated in the 15th century. This is one of the largest churches in the city. Then stop by Ospedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents), an early 15th-century building that is considered to be a good example of early Renaissance architecture.
