De Waterkant Village Walk (Self Guided), Cape Town
De Waterkant Village, situated low on Signal Hill and overlooking the bay, is a delightful part of Cape Town to explore. Like the Bo-Kaap district, the cottage-like houses are brightly painted and have been restored to their original beauty. The streets still have their 18th century cobble-stones and the sidewalks are tree-lined which heightens the village atmosphere – you could almost be in a European village here. Even the cafes wouldn’t be out of place in Paris!
This neighborhood has numerous restaurants and tapas bars where you can enjoy a top-class meal or delicious snack, according to your whim. The area is lively and boasts plenty of art galleries exhibiting local, national and international art. On Hudson Street you will find a wonderful artisan coffee roasting house where you can try different freshly ground and roasted coffees and visit the “lab” where you will learn all about the world’s most popular beverage.
For a New York inspired musical experience but with a definitive African flavor, check out the wonderful piano bar on the corner of Napier Street and Jarvis Street. There is also a high concentration of salsa and gay clubs to explore if you decide to stay on for the evening.
