Bur Dubai Sightseeing Walk, Dubai

Bur Dubai Sightseeing Walk (Self Guided), Dubai

Bur Dubai is the oldest part of the city and is situated on the southern side of Dubai Creek. Amble along its many streets to find historical buildings, museums, mosques and ancient neighborhoods. The area is less touristy than many other parts of the emirate and provides a fascinating insight into old Dubai.

Go to Al Bastakiya, the oldest residential area in the city, parts of which were built in the final years of the 17th century. On top of some of the old buildings are rectangular structures known as wind towers or wind catchers. They capture and cool desert winds and funnel them down into homes, an early form of air conditioning.

Learn more about Dubai's history when you browse the exhibits and artifacts of Dubai Museum. This intriguing attraction is housed inside Al Fahidi Fort, a defensive structure that was built in 1787. For more historical insights, make the short trip to Shindagha, one of the oldest areas in Dubai. It is home to the Heritage Village and the residence of a former ruler of Dubai.

Arguably, one of the emirate’s most beautiful buildings and a highlight of any visit to Bur Dubai is the Juma Grand Mosque. This multi-domed mosque has the tallest minaret in Dubai, rising up 230 feet (70 meters).

The ultra-modern city of Dubai did not always look the way it does now. For centuries, the city's economy relied heavily on the pearling and fishing industries. The Maktoum family, Dubai's current rulers, took over the reigns in 1883. The discovery of oil in 1966 set the change for a shift away from reliance on the marine industry.
