Even though I was excited to finally travel to Georgia, that feeling didn’t really extend to Tbilisi, the country’s capital. I think that the image I had in my mind was of a grim, unpleasant city from the Soviet era. As is often the case, those expectations were deeply flawed and way off. Instead, I’d recommend that all travellers visit Tbilisi given the chance. It’s a complex city for sure, but it’s also cool and quirky at times, and unlike any European city I can think of.

Georgia seems to be having its time in the limelight, gaining more and more attention as an up-and-coming destination. While the epic landscapes and the wine are big selling points for a trip to Georgia, I think it’s time that visiting Tbilisi joins that list. Yes, people go to Tbilisi when they visit Georgia but that’s normally out of necessity. It’s high time that actually experiencing Tbilisi became focus as well.
