Koopmans-de Wet House, Cape Town
The Koopmans-de Wet House, situated on Strand Street in Cape Town, is not only a former residence but also a museum. It joined the South African Museum's collection in 1913 and was accessible to the public starting from March 10, 1914. Designated as a National Monument in 1940 under the legislation of the National Monuments Council, it holds the distinction of being the oldest house museum in South Africa.
The architectural style of the building exhibits a pronounced Neoclassical influence, characterized by four pilasters, with the inner pair crowned by a pediment. Its construction dates back to around 1793, with some attributing it to the French architect Louis Michel Thibault, although this claim lacks definitive proof. Noteworthy features include a teak and plaster architrave at the entrance, a shaped teak transom, and a projecting lantern. The banisters, crafted from teak with stink-wood returns, contribute to the overall aesthetic. Inside, the ceilings are uniformly made of teak.
Within the Koopmans-de Wet House, visitors can explore various rooms that retain their original furnishings. These rooms include the drawing room, dining room, lower hall, small sitting room, music room, morning room and kitchen, main bedroom, and second bedroom.
